Braking

The fluid for a hydraulic brake depends on the brake maker: DOT on one side, mineral oil on the other, and the two never mix.

DOT 4, DOT 5.1 or mineral oil

Velox DOT 4 boils at 257 °C, DOT 5.1 at 260 °C: enough to keep braking consistent on long descents. Both are made in France, in 500 ml bottles. The low-viscosity mineral oil comes in 125 ml and in litres for workshops. For discs and pads, the disc brake cleaner.
