What it does

The Elite S3 is Tufo's lightweight racing tubular, successor to the S3 Lite. Under 225 g in 23 mm, and that figure is a guaranteed maximum, not a factory average. It is the versatile competition tubular of the range: light enough for racing, protected enough not to be kept for special days.

What has changed

Compared with the S3 Lite, the tread has been redesigned and the base tape widened. This last point matters when fitting: a wider base tape gives more contact surface for the double-sided tape or glue, hence a more secure bond and easier centring on the rim.

The construction

Casing 210/375 TPI, rubber compound SPC Silica, Vectran barrier and rubber puncture strip under the tread. It is also the tubular that comes in colour: black, red, blue, yellow or beige sidewalls, in 23 and 25 mm.

Vectran barrier The toughest material in the Tufo catalogue: a Vectran layer, a liquid-crystal polymer five times stronger than steel of equal cross-section, against punctures, cuts and blowouts.	SPC Silica compound Tufo's reference road compound: 66 Shore A, a blend of natural and synthetic rubbers loaded with activated silica, for wet grip and low rolling resistance.
Rubber puncture strip A thickness of rubber placed under the tread: whatever gets through the rubber stops there before reaching the casing. It adds to the model's puncture barrier; it does not replace it. Tufo calls it “protective rubber ply”.
