The narrow, light tubular for smooth tarmac: low-drag profile, very high pressures.
What it does
The S3 Lite is a narrow, light tubular for smooth surfaces : under 200 g in 26 inches, under 215 g in 28 inches, 21 mm section. It is fitted equally to the rear wheels of racing wheelchairs and to track and road bikes, and is popular in triathlon.
Why narrow
On smooth tarmac at high pressure, a narrow section reduces the contact patch and deformation: that is where rolling resistance is lowest and aerodynamic drag smallest. The calculation stops being good as soon as the road deteriorates.
The construction
Casing 120/240 TPI, rubber compound SPC Silica, rubber puncture strip, guaranteed maximum weight, pressure from 8 to 15 bar. In 26 and 28 inches.
What's inside
 An extra layer of rubberised casing under the tread: a sufficient barrier against most punctures, without hurting efficiency. |
 Tufo's reference road compound: 66 Shore A, a blend of natural and synthetic rubbers loaded with activated silica, for wet grip and low rolling resistance. |
 A thickness of rubber placed under the tread: whatever gets through the rubber stops there before reaching the casing. It adds to the model's puncture barrier; it does not replace it. Tufo calls it “protective rubber ply”. |
